Your Streaming Weather Forecast
Last month we kicked off our newsletter series focused on streaming the news for cord-cutters. Beyond the big headlines, we know that a fundamental element of watching the news revolves around weather forecasts. Whether you're wondering if you should pack an umbrella or you'd like to keep tabs on large-scale weather events like flooding and tornado warnings, staying in-the-know is essential. That’s why this month, we’re focusing on platforms that are designed to bring you streaming weather news.
Getting local coverage is crucial when it comes to weather reports. Local Now is a free streaming service launched in part by The Weather Channel that focuses on getting more than 230 cities across the country (with more being added all the time) news that’s relevant to them.
By setting your location, each time you open the app, you’ll be greeted by an automated player showing local news content, from politics and weather to sports and pop culture. You’re easily able to skip through stories to get to the next topic, but one downside is that you can’t scroll through to quickly access a specific topic like the daily forecast.
Rather than in-depth coverage, these top stories are more like “quick hits,” bite-sized overviews to keep you in the know. This includes local weather coverage. The daily forecast includes daytime and nighttime temperatures, the temperatures in other local cities and a look at the current radar map. There’s even updates on local air quality and seasonal allergen counts, but you’ll have to look elsewhere for deeper coverage.
Beyond news, Local Now is also home to 100s of movies and TV shows. Explore content by genre or curated lists like “Live Concerts” and “Adrenaline Rush.” By setting up an account, you’ll be able to customize your profile, save shows to your watchlist for future viewing.
The user interface is simple and easy to navigate, but harder to customize to your needs. Overall, if you’re a person who just wants the basics on local weather, news and more, Local Now can be a great centralized service. Local Now is currently available for free on Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, Apple TV and Apple devices, Sling, fubo TV, Google Play and via web browsers.
WeatherNation uses the latest technology in predictive weather modeling sources like the National Weather Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Storm Prediction Center and more to bring customers 24/7 hyper-local weather content. Access forecasts, live radars and weather-related breaking news. Looking for a deeper dive? WeatherNation also offers on-demand content on topics like understanding rainfall and debunking common lightning myths. WeatherNation is available for free on Amazon Fire devices, Android TV and Android devices, Apple TV and Apple devices, Roku devices, LG, Panasonic, Phillips, Sony, Samsung, Vizio smart TVs, web browsers and more.
HaystackNews is designed to get “smarter” over time. That means, it learns more about you and your preferences based on your usage. While HaystackNews doesn’t create original content, they aggregate breaking news from global and local platforms, which you’re able to view in bite-sized videos. By personalizing your profile with topics of interest and even favorite news sources, you can customize your viewing experience.
While the platform is not weather-focused, it has plenty of weather content for you to watch. Local sources include CBS Chicago and ABC-7. If you’d like to understand the bigger picture, national and international coverage included comes from AccuWeather, Praedictix, Reuters and more. HaystackNews is free and available via Android TV and Android devices, Amazon Fire TV devices, Apple TV and Apple devices, Roku devices, LG, Sony, Toshiba and Vizio smart TVs, and web browsers.
Launched over the summer, AccuWeather NOW features 24/7 live weather-related programming and breaking news, forecasts, and long-and-short-form documentaries on weather and climate. AccuWeather, which has been around since the '60s and developed the first 7-day local forecasts for television, has long been a trusted name in forecasting. This new endeavor marks an exciting new chapter in the industry. In a recent statement, AccuWeather Network General Manager Sarah Katt said, “weather impacts everything we do, and weather news and information are increasingly fascinating to streaming audiences who have a special appreciation for compelling, highly visual content from a trusted source.” AccuWeather NOW is currently only available for Roku devices and via web browser through the Roku channel, but we will be sure to share if the platform expands.
